EGL vs GIA Certified Diamonds

While shopping for diamonds, most buyers are aware that certification is important in determining the authenticity and overall value of jewelry. However, with so many certification institutes in the world, it can be difficult for consumers to know which ones are the most trustworthy. We, at Royal Design Fine Jewelry, are proud to provide the world’s most luxurious and beautiful loose diamond accessories for our clients in Atlanta, Georgia and across America. Both GIA and EGL are reputable institutions for diamond certification, but if you’re looking for more details about the differences between the two organizations, here is some information that can help you make the best decision for your needs.

What Are EGL and GIA Certified Diamonds?

Both the EGL and GIA are well respected organizations that provide diamond certification. The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) are the most frequently sought after certifications for those who are interested in purchasing the highest quality diamonds and gemstones. Both institutes have locations in the US, Europe and throughout the world.

The History of the EGL and GIA

The EGL was established in 1974 in Belgium by Guy Margel. Over the past several centuries their offices have expanded to include more than a thousand employees in New York, Los Angeles, Tel Aviv, London, Antwerp, Paris and more. The GIA was begun in 1931 by Robert M. Shipley and was the first to apply the International Diamond Grading System which included cut, clarity, color and carat weight. Since their establishment, they have been constant pioneers in the field of gemology and have profoundly impacted the jewelry industry.

Differences in Certifications

While EGL certifications are certainly well trusted by retailers and buyers throughout the world, the consistently strict standards of the Gemological Institute of America place them as the premiere organization for diamond evaluation. Every diamond must be appraised by a minimum of four expertly trained gemologists. In some cases, diamonds that are EGL certified may have a comparable quality of diamond that is up to two color grades, and one clarity grade lower than it’s GIA counterpart. For this reason, GIA diamonds are often perceived to have slightly more value overall than an EGL certified diamond. While many buyers feel more confident purchasing a diamond with GIA certification, those that have been evaluated by the European Gemological Laboratory are sure to be of superb quality as well. Having certification from either institute will ensure that your diamonds and gemstones will retain its value and desirability long term.
