What is Jade?

Jade is a mineral that is well known for its beautiful shades of green. The term Jade is actually used interchangeably for two different varieties of minerals, Nephrite and Jadeite. Nephrite is made from interlocking crystals of calcium and magnesium abundant iron. Jadeite on the other hand is a mixture of pyroxene and sodium.

Where is Jade Commonly Found?

Almost 70 percent of the worlds Jadeite supply is mined in Myanmar, a Southeast Asian country previously known as Burma. Smaller caches of Jade have also been found in Taiwan, the Philippines, Malaysia and Vietnam. New Zealand also has a Nephrite form of Jade which the Maori call Greenstone or pounamu. The mining, selling and exportation of this sacred stone is highly regulated by the New Zealand government because it is protected under the countries Treaty of Waitangi, and is therefore rare to find in the marketplace. Jade has also been discovered in Canada and Mesoamerica, where it was used extensively by Mayan and Olmec civilizations.
