History and Associations of the Emerald

Once a favorite of Cleopatra, the emerald has been associated with royalty and opulence throughout history. From the jewelry of ancient pharaohs to the 17th century created Crown of the Andes, this luscious gemstone has been chosen for its unique hue and incredible shimmer. In the past and present, emeralds have been largely associated with the spring season, fertility, faith, regeneration, relaxation and healing. It has become a symbol for people born during the month of May, the time of year that represents abundance and vitality. In ancient times emeralds were mined mostly in Egypt at Mount Smaragdus. In later periods, more deposits were found in Europe, India, Russia, South America, the United States and multiple regions of Africa.  Contact us today for custom jewelry design in Atlanta

Famous Emerald Jewelry

The Guinness Emerald Crystal is one of the largest gem-quality emeralds in the entire world, measuring an astounding 1759 carats. It was found in the Coscuez mines of Columbia and is currently on display at the Banco Nacionale de la Republica in Bogota. One of the most famous emerald pieces is the tiara of the French Duchess of Angouleme. It was created in 1819 and is housed at the Louvre Museum. The Moghul Emerald is another exquisite item discovered in India during the 17th century. The delicately carved, 217.8 carat gemstone has been highly sought after since its creation and was recently sold at auction for more than $2 million. If you’re interested in more contemporary styles, then you’ll enjoy viewing the Chalk Emerald at the National Museaum of Natural History in Washington DC. It was designed by Harry Winston in 1972 and features a 37.8 carat emerald surrounded by 60 pear shaped diamonds.

Caring for Emerald Jewelry

Emeralds are normally between 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. While this is much harder than some natural gemstones, it is much softer than a diamond, which tops the Mohs scale at 10. Therefore, it’s important to take care of your emerald jewelry to maintain their beauty and brilliance over time. Avoid wearing emeralds when performing tasks that could harm the stone, such as gardening or rinsing dishes.
